Argentine Deputy Says 'A Half-Truth Is a Complete Lie'

Deputy from La Libertad Avanza (LLA) Alberto 'Bertie' Benegas Lynch stated on Tuesday that 'a memory that selects what it remembers also chooses what it decides to forget,' in a statement on the 50th anniversary of the 1976 coup. In his message, advocating for what he called 'the full truth,' the legislator argued that 'a memory that selects what it remembers also chooses what it decides to forget.' 'A half-truth is a complete lie,' he added. Meanwhile, the government released a video marking the 50th anniversary of the March 24, 1976 coup, once again reinforcing the official stance of equating state violence with that of guerrilla organizations from the 1970s. The video features the testimonies of a 'recovered grandchild'—a baby who was appropriated by a police officer convicted of crimes against humanity—and the son of an army colonel who was kidnapped and assassinated by the People's Revolutionary Army in 1974. 'There is no good terrorism if they are idealists,' the post reads.
